Katamatite Garlic

Lisa & Grahame Eddy • Katamatite

Katamatite Garlic is an award-winning primary producer who practices permaculture to grow organic garlic.

The Eddys started their farm in Katamatite some 10 years ago after moving from Canberra, looking for a new life for their young family and aiming to be self-sufficient.

The couple started growing a range of crops on a small scale and selling at local farmers’ markets, but always had the feeling that ‘garlic could be good.’

“We could see that sustainably grown Australian garlic was a niche market,” says Grahame.

“There were too many inferior imports and we saw a gap we thought we could help to fill.”

The Eddy’s aim, right from the start, was to help people renew their connection with real food and to get excited about local, artisanal produce.

“We’ve always taken special care to market the highest quality naturally grown garlic, with all its health giving properties,” says Grahame.

“We also try to show creativity through the offer of a variety of garlic products that can be used at home or commercially.”

“Quality food should not cost us the earth and we will always stay true to that.”

After receiving advice from the Moira Shire Council, the couple took a leap into larger scale production.

About this time, Lisa visited the Small Business Bus, and was given some information on starting a business.

“I grabbed a few booklets from the bus about general start up issues,” she says.

“The information about regulatory issues was particularly helpful and pointed us in the right direction.”

Since then, the couple has been focussed on learning about business.

“We had a transformation and have deliberately set about learning how to run a business, how to practice marketing, accounting and value-adding,” says Grahame.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the Eddys business philosophy.

“It’s all about connection with people and an appreciation of community.”

“Our kids help out, we try to educate people about the benefit of organically grown produce and share the knowledge we have acquired.”

Grahame says that smaller boutique businesses, like Katamatite Garlic, are vital to communities.

Into the future, the Eddys have a solid plan – they imagine growing more varieties of garlic, producing more products for their farm gate shop, and increasing the workshops, classes and farm visits they run.

“Quality food should not cost us the earth and we will always stay true to that.”
